Our Story
There comes a moment when you realize that moving forward sometimes means returning to what called you first.
My story began long before Il Viaggio — and long before Sweet Crumbs — around a family table.
In my Grandmom’s kitchen, food was never simply something we ate. It was how we showed love, how we welcomed people, and how we kept our family connected. There was always room for one more.
My Grandmom was born in 1935. That year in our name is not simply a date or a design detail. It is my way of honoring the woman whose love of food, family and hospitality helped shape the person — and the chef — I became. It is my way of bringing her with me into everything that comes next.
Sweet Crumbs opened in 2020 and grew into more than I ever imagined. Through the bakery, I was invited into your birthdays, weddings, holidays, milestones and ordinary days that deserved something sweet. I will always be proud of what we created, and deeply grateful to every person who allowed us to become part of their family’s memories.
But as the business grew, its path began to change. It moved toward larger production, wholesale orders, and a pace that took me further away from the part I loved most.
I missed the connection.
I missed knowing the names behind the orders. I missed seeing familiar families walk through the door. I missed making food face-to-face and handing it directly to the person who would enjoy it. I missed the feeling of community that made me want to open a small business in the first place.
And through all of it, another dream had been quietly waiting.
Long before the bakery, I dreamed of opening a small Italian deli — the kind of place rooted in old-world food traditions, where beautiful ingredients are treated with respect, bread matters, recipes tell stories, and everyone who walks through the door feels like family. Life simply took me down a different road first.
Years later, a journey through Italy finally gave that dream its direction. In Florence, I discovered the schiacciata shops that would become the inspiration for Il Viaggio: simple spaces built around extraordinary bread, carefully chosen ingredients, and sandwiches composed with purpose. Nothing felt excessive. Nothing was there without a reason. The bread was not an afterthought; it was the heart of the meal.
Florence gave the dream its form.
My Sicilian roots gave it its soul.
Warmth, boldness, generosity, and the belief that food is meant to bring people together.
Il Viaggio means “The Journey,” and this name holds every part of mine: my Grandmom’s table, the years of Sweet Crumbs, the lessons learned along the way, the streets of Florence, my family’s Sicilian heritage, and the decision to bring it all home to Pitman.
Il Viaggio is not about erasing Sweet Crumbs. It is the next chapter of the same story. The food has changed, but the heart behind it has not.
Here, our schiacciata is made locally and especially for us by Florentine bakers, using ingredients imported from Italy. It is filled with carefully chosen meats, cheeses, vegetables, creams, oils and finishing touches — sliced thin and layered with balance so every flavor can be tasted. It is not a traditional Philadelphia or South Jersey hoagie, and it is not trying to be. It is something different: a little piece of Florence, shaped by Sicilian soul and brought home to our neighborhood.
The why behind Il Viaggio is simple.
I wanted to create a place where food carries memory, craftsmanship still matters, and people feel genuinely welcome. I wanted to build something personal again — to feed my community with intention, to know the faces on the other side of the counter, and to make room for one more.
This is the journey that began at my Grandmom’s table. Sweet Crumbs helped me find my way. Florence showed me the direction. And Il Viaggio is where it all comes together.
Welcome to Il Viaggio 1935. Every meal is a journey.
With love, Jeanine
