You May Notice We Do
Things a Little Differently

New to Florentine schiacciata? Here are a few things to know before beginning your journey.

Find Your Sandwich

I’ve never had a sandwich like this. Which one should I try first?

For something mild and familiar, begin with Eleanora: premium Italian cooked ham, buffalo mozzarella, roasted sweet peppers, arugula, olive oil and black pepper. For the balance of savory, creamy and gently sweet flavors that defines our menu, choose Il Duomo. If you love mortadella and want something beautifully simple, Portico is another lovely place to begin.

Which sandwich is the spiciest?

Etna is the hottest sandwich on our menu. Spicy Italian salame and ’nduja are balanced with pecorino cream, roasted Calabrian peppers and lightly dressed arugula. It is bold, creamy and intentionally fiery.

Which sandwich is the sweetest?

For a gently sweet savory sandwich, choose Domenica. Premium Italian cooked ham is paired with whipped ricotta, fig spread, honey and crushed pistachios. For dessert, I Nipoti brings together warm schiacciata, Nutella, banana and a light drizzle of honey.

Which sandwich is the richest?

Choose Franco. Italian herb-roasted porchetta, truffle cream, shaved Pecorino Toscano and arugula create a sandwich that is rich, earthy and deeply savory.

Which sandwich is the most traditional or classic?

Lucca is our simplest expression of the Florentine sandwich tradition: Prosciutto Toscano, aged pecorino, arugula, Sicilian lemon olive oil and black pepper. Nothing unnecessary — just beautiful ingredients allowed to speak for themselves.

A Moment for Mortadella

I’ve never tried mortadella. Which sandwich should I choose?

For the simplest introduction, choose Portico. Silky pistachio mortadella is paired with robiolina, a mild and creamy Italian cheese. It is delicate, comforting and beautifully uncomplicated.

If you love pistachio, choose Santa Croce. Mortadella, creamy stracciatella, pistachio spread and crushed pistachios create a sandwich that is buttery, nutty and carefully layered without feeling heavy.

Is mortadella the same as bologna?

Mortadella is the traditional Italian specialty that inspired American bologna, but the experience is very different. Our mortadella is silky and delicately seasoned, with visible pistachios and a much more refined flavor and texture. It is sliced fresh and paper-thin so it folds softly into the schiacciata. If you think you do not like bologna, mortadella may surprise you.

Why We Do Things Differently

What is schiacciata?

Schiacciata is a traditional Tuscan flatbread with a crisp, olive-oil-finished exterior and a light, airy center. Its name comes from the Italian word meaning pressed or flattened, referring to the way the dough is shaped — not to pressing the finished sandwich. At Il Viaggio, the bread is not an afterthought. It is the foundation of every sandwich.

Why don’t you use a traditional hoagie roll?

Because then it would be a different sandwich. We are not recreating the Philadelphia or South Jersey hoagie. Our sandwiches are inspired by the streets of Florence, where schiacciata is as important as everything placed inside it. The crisp edges, airy interior and flavor of the olive oil are all part of the experience.

Why can’t I get mayonnaise?

Our sandwiches are composed with Italian cheeses, creams, pestos, olive oils and accompaniments chosen specifically for each combination. They provide the creaminess, moisture and balance that mayonnaise or traditional hoagie condiments normally would. We simply ask that you try your sandwich the way it was created first. You may discover it does not need anything else.

Where is the turkey?

You will not find deli turkey on our menu. Il Viaggio is centered around Italian ingredients and the traditions that inspired us: Prosciutto Toscano, mortadella, finocchiona, porchetta, spicy salame, Italian tuna and carefully prepared vegetables. Every ingredient on our menu is here for a reason and has a story to tell.

Can I build my own sandwich?

Every Il Viaggio sandwich has been created as a complete dish, with each ingredient chosen and portioned to complement the others. For that reason, we do not offer build-your-own sandwiches. We are happy to leave off an ingredient when possible, but we encourage you to experience the sandwich as it was intended.

Why aren’t the sandwiches piled high?

Because more is not always better. Meats are sliced thin, and cheeses, vegetables, creams and oils are carefully portioned so that no single ingredient overwhelms the others. A beautiful slice of Prosciutto Toscano should not disappear beneath a mountain of toppings — and neither should the bread. Our sandwiches are built for balance, not height.

Do you press or grill the sandwiches?

No. Pressing the finished sandwich would change the texture of the schiacciata and warm ingredients that are meant to remain delicate. We want you to experience the bread’s crisp exterior and airy center exactly as intended.

More Ways to Find Your Favorite

What should I try if I don’t eat pork?

Try one of our Italian tuna sandwiches. Catania pairs Italian tuna in olive oil with Sicilian caponata, arugula and Sicilian lemon olive oil for something bright and sweet-savory. Messina combines Italian tuna with white bean cream, sun-dried tomatoes, arugula, rose vinegar and olive oil for a creamier, heartier flavor.

Do you have vegetarian sandwiches?

Yes. Our vegetable sandwiches are composed with the same care as the rest of our menu. Choose A’ Vittoria for rustic Sicilian eggplant; Bardini for something creamy and garden-fresh; San Gimignano for a hearty white-bean-based sandwich; or Giada Alessandra for burrata, pistachio pesto and bright Sicilian flavors.

What if I want something familiar but still distinctly Italian?

Try Eleanora. Premium Italian cooked ham, buffalo mozzarella, roasted sweet peppers, arugula, olive oil and black pepper make it mild, savory and approachable. It feels familiar enough for a first visit while still giving you the Il Viaggio experience.

Ingredients, Craft and the Menu

What are muddica atturrata and caponata?

Muddica atturrata is a Sicilian seasoned breadcrumb mixture toasted until golden. It adds warmth, flavor and delicate crunch. Caponata is a traditional Sicilian preparation built around eggplant and balanced sweet-savory flavors. Our version brings richness and brightness to both La Sicilia and Catania.

What do DOP and IGP mean?

DOP and IGP are protected European designations connecting a food to its place of origin and traditional production. DOP indicates that every major stage of production takes place within the designated region according to established standards. IGP means a product’s quality, reputation or tradition is connected to a region, with at least one stage of production taking place there.

These names matter because they protect more than a product — they protect its history, craftsmanship and connection to place. Whenever possible and appropriate, those are the stories we want represented on our menu.

Are your sandwiches made to order?

Yes. Our sandwiches are assembled to order, and our meats are sliced fresh for each one. That little extra time allows us to protect the texture of the ingredients and build every sandwich with the balance it was created to have.

Is this your entire sandwich menu, or do you offer specials?

This is our regular menu, but we often offer specials throughout the week. Follow us on social media for the latest sandwiches, seasonal ingredients and special announcements.

Can you accommodate food allergies?

Please tell us about any food allergy before ordering so we can help you understand the ingredients in your selection. Our kitchen regularly handles wheat, milk, tree nuts, fish and other allergens. Because our food is prepared in a shared kitchen and on shared equipment, cross-contact is possible, and we cannot guarantee that any item is completely free of an allergen.

Come with an open mind and an appetite.

A sandwich does not have to look familiar — or be enormous — to take you somewhere.
